Parity Diagnoses

The following have been considered "parity" diagnoses in California. Although the term "parity" suggests that people with these diagnoses will be reimbursed in the same way that they would be for a medical illness, these diagnoses are still reimbursed differently in many aspects.

Although this should not be construed as advice about your insurance benefits, it may help you to ask the appropriate questions of your benefits manager. For adults, the "parity" diagnoses are:

It should be noted that many insurance companies have begun to include more diagnoses under the same terms as these parity diagnoses. Though not technically protected by the parity legislation, payers may refer to these as "parity" diagnoses for the purposes of their own reimbursement policies.

Of course, a diagnosis is the result of a professional judgment and cannot be adjusted on the basis of rates of payment.
